In-Depth 60 Minutes Anti-Foreigner Special
Here is the KBS program we alerted you to earlier called In-Depth 60 Minutes, which aired Wednesday, September 5th. While it wasn't as sinister as the preview would have lead you to believe (with its red-light images of foreigners drinking set to a heavy metal soundtrack), it still had its fair share of scary-foreigner-with-manipulative-music-in-the-background moments(though not to the extent of the Pandora's Box one a few months ago). Practically half of this "expose" is just a tutorial on how to get a fake degree, something which seems to be of more interest to Koreans looking to get ahead these days. Anyways, here it is:

Part 1:

Part 2:

Unfortunately, there isn't a foreseeable end to this sort of anti-foreigner propaganda. SBS, who brought us this wonderful piece a few years ago, is already putting together a new one, according to the English Spectrum Cafe.

Re: In-Depth 60 Minutes Anti-Foreigner Special
They did manage to bring up some important issues: fake degrees, corrupt hagwons, and teachers who don't take their job/life here seriously.
However, they do paint their picture with too broad a brush. Some of those "teachers" they interviewed, "yeah Korea is the easiest" etc. need a good slap.

Re: In-Depth 60 Minutes Anti-Foreigner Special
It bothers me that after struggling through years at a University to gain
an education, some people just buy one or two degrees and gain all the benefits and open doors I worked so hard for. In reality they are
cheating themselves, the students, and Koreans. These people must be living in constant fear of being found out. What a great life?
This is really sad. sad smiley
On a happier note: When a schools hires an English teacher with
legit degree and credentials, perhaps the teacher will be better appreciated.

Re: In-Depth 60 Minutes Anti-Foreigner Special
An incredible lack of respect for education is developing in North America. I work very hard at my job, I take it very seriously. It drives me nuts when people say, "teaching English, that must be pretty easy...etc. blah blah blah."

Has anyone else met many illegal teachers? It seems to me that a lot of them just aren't very bright. Ie. they have no knowledge whatsoever about the illegality of their situation. At least, that's been the case, of a number that I've met.

Re: In-Depth 60 Minutes Anti-Foreigner Special
The thing I've always wondered about these people with fake degrees is, what do they tell their family? I mean, it just seems so strange.

About the show, I wonder if they have paid for the rights to use the theme music from "Run Lola Run," a German movie, during their closing credits. spinning smiley sticking its tongue out
